Space shuttle Atlantis blasted off on Monday with seven astronauts on an ambitious 11-day mission to refurbish the Hubble that has changed our understanding of the universe. Atlantis bolted off its seaside launch pad on Nasa’s 126th shuttle mission and the second of five planned for this year. Astronauts will try to equip Hubble with two new instruments, six positioning gyroscopes, batteries and fresh thermal insulation. The fate of Hubble’s final repair job was thrown into doubt after the loss of shuttle Columbia and its crew in 2003.
